The First Page of a Recent Book

Taking the past by the hand
I recall miniature mansions sleeping in unison
reading Sylvia Plath like she never existed
it never happened, those streets and nights
it never happened, those dirt alleyways
thinking on it now like a chapter
it needs no editing and flows with a raven-haired pulse
an aside in a life where nothing exists
except for a book full of notes
and thoughts of a dusty floor where our feet
met, wept, and dusted the night back into the sky

Jim H. Duncan is a New York native currently living on the road and is working on two novels and a third collection of poetry. As an avid and dedicated hermit, nothing pleases him more than eating alone in a busy restaurant with a good book, taking that book out to a movie, and afterward, home to see how far he can go with it without feeling guilty the next morning. His work has been published in Void Magazine, DecomP, The Culture Star Reader and can be seen at www.jhdwriting.com.
